The District Court Clerk is the record-keeper for felony criminal cases, civil actions exceeding $50,000, family law matters, probate proceedings, juvenile cases, and adoptions. Circuit Court clerks handle records for misdemeanor criminal matters and civil cases up to $50,000.

How to Look Up a Court Case in Park County?

The office operates from both the Cody courthouse and a Powell location. Under Wyoming Statute § 5-3-213, clerks are prohibited by law from giving legal advice. They can help with procedural questions — filing requirements, fees, and document submissions — but nothing beyond that.

Are Court Records Public in Park County?
Under the Wyoming Public Records Act, codified at Wyoming Statutes §§ 16-4-201 through 16-4-205, all public records held by state agencies and political subdivisions — including county courts — are open for inspection by any person at reasonable times during normal business hours. That presumption of openness is broad, but it does have real limits.
The following categories of court records are confidential or restricted in Park County under state and federal law:
- Juvenile court records — Fully confidential under the Wyoming Juvenile Justice Act; proceedings are generally closed unless a jury trial is demanded
- Adoption records — Sealed upon entry of the final adoption decree; access requires court appointment of a confidential intermediary under W.S. 1-22-203
- Mental health cases — Confidential and not accessible to the general public
- Workers' compensation matters — Restricted from general public access
- Sex offender risk assessment proceedings — Confidential during the assessment process
- Paternity civil suits — Confidential except for the final judgment
- Sealed medical, financial, and school records — Any such records filed within an otherwise public case remain sealed from public view
Even within records that are open to the public, sensitive data — such as Social Security numbers and protected persons' addresses — may be redacted before disclosure. If a court determines that restricting access to a case record is necessary to ensure a fair trial or protect a victim's identity, it can order that access be limited by court order.
Park County Criminal Court Records
Felony criminal cases in Park County are prosecuted before the Fifth Judicial District Court, which has jurisdiction over all felony offenses committed within the county. District Court Judge Bill Simpson presides over the court. Misdemeanor criminal matters go to the Park County Circuit Court, which operates courtrooms in both Cody and Powell.

Arrest Records and Inmate Information
Arrest records are kept separately from court records. The Park County Sheriff's Office operates the county detention facility and provides an online inmate search tool showing currently incarcerated individuals, booking dates, and charges. For detention inquiries, call the Sheriff's Office detention line at (307) 527-8761. The sheriff's website also gives access to arrest records, calls for service, and a sex offender registry. Keep in mind that the system does not include information on juvenile offenders.

Civil jurisdiction in Park County is split between two courts based on the dollar amount of the claim:

Copy fees at the District Court Clerk's Office are $1.00 for the first page and $0.50 for each additional page. Certified copies carry a $0.50 certification seal fee. Fax or email transmission of records costs $1.00 per page.
Accessing Civil Records
Civil records are not available online through the county clerk's website. You'll need to visit the courthouse in person to use the public access terminal, or submit a written request to the District Court Clerk. A case number is helpful but not always required — providing party names and the approximate case year is generally enough to get a search started.
The District Court also handles appeals from Circuit Court civil decisions and serves as the judicial review body for administrative agency decisions under Wyoming law.
Park County Family Court Records
All family law matters in Park County — divorce, child custody, child support, parentage, adoptions, guardianships, and domestic violence protection orders — fall under the jurisdiction of the Fifth Judicial District Court. The District Court Clerk maintains all family case files and has a specific duty under Wyoming law to receive and distribute child support payments.
Divorce Records
Certified copies of divorce decrees are available only from the District Court Clerk, not from the Wyoming Department of Health. To get a certified divorce record, contact the District Clerk's office directly at (307) 527-8690 (Cody) or (307) 754-8690 (Powell). Be ready to supply the full names of both parties and the approximate year the divorce was granted.
If you need statewide divorce verification — useful when you're unsure which county the divorce was filed in — the Wyoming Department of Health Vital Statistics Services maintains divorce records and can issue certified copies for $25.00 per copy. The Vital Statistics office is open Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Marriage Records
Marriage licenses in Park County are issued by the Park County Clerk's Office at the Cody courthouse. The license fee is $30.00, payable by cash, check, or debit/credit card. To get a certified copy of a marriage certificate, you can visit the County Clerk or request records from Wyoming Vital Statistics Services.

To request a marriage or divorce record from Vital Statistics Services, you'll need to supply the full names of both parties, the date of the event, the county or city where it occurred, a valid ID, a signature, and a mailing address. The certified copy fee through the state is $25.00 per copy.
Birth and Death Records
Birth and death certificates are processed and issued by Wyoming's Vital Statistics Services (located at 2300 Capitol Avenue, Hathaway Building, Cheyenne, WY 82002; Phone: (307) 777-7591). These records are not open to the general public.
Birth certificate access is limited to the registrant (if 18 or older), either parent named on the certificate, a legal representative, or a legal guardian with court-ordered guardianship documentation. The fee is $20.00 per copy.
Death certificate access is restricted to immediate family members (spouse, child, or parent), legal representatives, financial institutions or insurers needing the certificate to process a benefit claim, and others who can document their relationship to the deceased. The fee is $20.00 for the first certified copy. Payment should be by money order or personal/bank check made payable to Vital Statistics Services, submitted with a stamped, self-addressed return envelope.
Park County Probate Court Records
All probate matters in Park County are handled by the Fifth Judicial District Court, with records maintained by District Court Clerk Debra Carroll. Wyoming District Courts exercise exclusive jurisdiction over estate administration, guardianships, and conservatorships under Wyoming Statutes Title 2.

Probate Filing Fees
The District Court charges a $160.00 filing fee for probate matters, including estates, guardianships, and conservatorships. Of that amount, $50.00 is allocated to court automation and indigent civil legal services. Reopened or modified probate proceedings also require a $160.00 filing fee.
