Laramie County occupies the southeastern corner of Wyoming, with its county seat in Cheyenne — the state capital. As part of Wyoming’s First Judicial District, the county is served by a District Court, a Circuit Court, and several Municipal Courts. Together, these courts process felony and misdemeanor criminal cases, civil disputes, domestic relations matters, juvenile proceedings, and probate filings. The Clerk of District Court maintains records dating back to 1890, functioning as the primary custodian for cases filed in the First Judicial District. Whether an individual needs to verify a criminal disposition, review a divorce decree, or check on an estate proceeding, Laramie County offers several pathways for accessing court records.

Wyoming residents and members of the public can search for court records through official clerk offices, in-person visits to the courthouse, and certain online tools. The Wyoming Supreme Court maintains an appellate case search portal where users can look up appellate-level case information. The Wyoming Judicial Branch website provides directories, court rules, and fee information for courts across the state. Additionally, WyomingCourts.us may assist users in locating publicly available court case information and connecting with the appropriate judicial resources.

Are Court Records Public in Laramie County?

Wyoming law establishes a broad right of public access to government records. Under the Wyoming Public Records Act (Wyoming Statutes §§ 16-4-201 through 16-4-205), all public records must be open for inspection by any person at reasonable times during business hours. Court records fall within the scope of this act, meaning that case filings, orders, judgments, docket entries, and transcripts are generally available to the public.

Certain categories of records are exempt from disclosure:

  • Records sealed or expunged by court order
  • Juvenile court proceedings and records
  • Adoption records
  • Documents containing the identity of confidential sources in criminal investigations
  • Records that would compromise an ongoing investigation
  • Records made confidential by specific state statutes or court orders
  • Mental health commitment records (in some circumstances)

When an otherwise public record contains confidential information, the court may redact the protected portions before releasing it. Individuals who believe they have a legal right to restricted records may need to present valid identification, a court order, or other documentation establishing their eligibility. The District Court Clerk’s office can advise requesters on whether specific records are subject to access restrictions.

The Wyoming Judicial Branch publishes statewide court rules governing fees and costs that apply to all district courts, including Laramie County’s.
