Fremont County, Wyoming is a large county in the central part of the state, with Lander serving as the county seat. The county’s court system encompasses district, circuit, and municipal courts spread across multiple communities, including Lander, Riverton, and Dubois. Each court maintains its own set of records based on the type and jurisdictional threshold of cases it handles, making it important to identify the correct court before submitting a records request.
The Fremont County District Court, part of Wyoming’s 9th Judicial District, serves as the court of permanent record for the county, with records dating back to 1885. The Clerk of District Court is the primary custodian of felony criminal records, civil cases above $50,000, family law filings, probate matters, and juvenile cases. Circuit court records — covering misdemeanors, civil cases under $50,000, small claims, and protection orders — are held separately by the Chief Clerk of each circuit court location.
Wyoming’s court records system can be approached through in-person visits to clerk offices, written and email requests, public access terminals at the courthouse, and online tools. For locating publicly available Wyoming court case information, WyomingCourts.us can serve as a starting point alongside official county and state resources.

Are Court Records Public in Fremont County?
Wyoming takes a broad approach to public access. The Wyoming Public Records Act (Wyoming Statute § 16-4-201 et seq.) declares that all public records shall be open for inspection by any person at reasonable times during business hours. This right extends to most records maintained by Fremont County’s courts and clerk offices.
The Wyoming Rules Governing Access to Court Records, as updated effective December 1, 2024, provide the detailed framework for what court records may and may not be disclosed. The Wyoming Supreme Court maintains an Access Security Matrix that governs how records are classified and released across all courts in the state.
Records Restricted from Public Access
Under these rules, the following categories are withheld or restricted in Fremont County:
- Adoption and intermediary records — sealed to protect all parties
- Juvenile proceedings — abuse, neglect, child in need of supervision, and delinquency cases are entirely confidential
- Domestic violence protection order petitioners’ identifying information — withheld to protect victim safety
- Mental health, medical, and substance abuse evaluation records — sealed from public view
- Search warrant applications and supporting documents — restricted until after the warrant is served
- Sealed records — any record sealed by statute, court rule, or specific court order
Individuals denied access to a record may file a petition with the court requesting access. The court will then make a determination as to whether the record is confidential or whether access should be granted.

- Identify the decedent, ward, or subject of the proceeding by full name and approximate filing year.

- Pay the applicable fees: $10.00 per name search; $1.00 for the first copied page; $0.50 per additional page. Payments should be made by cash, check, or money order payable to the Fremont County District Court.
Note that adoption records filed in the probate/district court are classified as confidential and are not available to the general public. Opening a formal probate proceeding requires filing the original will (if one exists), a certified death certificate, and documentation of the decedent’s assets with the District Court in Lander. Self-help forms for probate proceedings are available through the Wyoming Judicial Branch’s self-help forms library.
